Should I Set New Years Resolutions?
Written by: Taylor Aiona, LCSW 118192
As the New Year unfolds, many of us scribble down resolutions with enthusiasm. I’m guilty of this too! I promist myself to hit the gym regularly and eat healthier. Maybe you promise yourself to leave your job if you don’t receive a raise. You want to tell people no every time you want to. This then all ends up being wishful thinking. The weeks roll by and we’re left wondering why our resolutions seem to not take off. I think this is a very important topic because we’re all guilty of this sometimes. We’re going to tak about managing New Year’s resolutions and expectations. How can I set realistic goals? Why is it importatnt to be adapable with my resolutations. And a sprinkle of practical tips to help you stay on track without setting yourself up for disappointment.
Setting Realistic Goals in Your New Years Resolution

Let’s begin by acknowledging a simple truth: Rome wasn’t built in a day. In other words, neither will your New Year’s resolutions be. I see often people setting unrealistic expectations, leading to frustration and burnout. We don’t want to aim for overhauling your entire lifestyle over night. Consider breaking down your goals into manageable chunks.
For instance, if your resolution is to exercise more, start with small, achievable steps. Rather than vowing to hit the gym six or seven days a week, commit to a more realistic three or four days. This not only sets you up for success but also allows for flexibility in your routine. Over time you might increase the number of days you work out too.
The Power of Small Wins Towards Your Resolution
Celebrating small victories is a crucial aspect of managing resolutions. Completing a week of regular exercise is worth noticing. Even prioritizing green veggies in your meals is worth acknowledgement. By recognizing these small wins, you build momentum and reinforce positive behavior.
Remember, progress is progress, no matter how small. Instead of fixating on the end goal, focus on the steps and the positive changes you’re making along the way.
Embrace Adaptability with Resolution Setbacks
Life is unpredictable, don’t we all know. Sometimes it throws curveballs that can derail even the most well-intentioned resolutions. Rather than viewing obstacles as insurmountable roadblocks, embrace adaptability. I like to call this being flexible with my clients. Understand that setbacks are a natural part of any journey towards self-improvement.
If unexpected challenges arise, be prepared to adjust your approach. If work commitments make it challenging to stick to your planned workout schedule, find alternative ways to stay active. Incorporate bits of exercise or walks around your office building throughout the day. Flexibility is key to overcoming obstacles and staying committed to your goals.
Ditch the All-or-Nothing Mentality

I cannot emphasis this one enough! Please ditch this mentality. One of the biggest stumbling blocks in managing resolutions is the all-or-nothing mentality. If I follow this mentality, I am either a complete failure or I’m perfect. And neither of those are factual! This mindset leads to disappointment and frustration when perfection becomes unattainable. Remember, life is messy, and maintaining a strict regimen 24/7 is neither practical nor sustainable.
Allow yourself some leeway. If you veer off course for a day or two, don’t throw in the towel altogether. Acknowledge the slip-up, learn from it, and get back on track. The key is to foster a mindset of progress, not perfection.
Create a Support System to Achieve Your Resolutions
Engaged in self-improvement is often more enjoyable when you have a support system in place. Share your “resolutions” with friends or family. Share with people who can provide you with encoragement and motivation. If you have someone who supports you with a gentle nudge, share with them. Someone in your life tends to be forceful with their nudges, we might not enlist their support. Unless that’s what you’re looking for.
Consider joining groups or communities with similar goals. Whether it’s a workout buddy, an online forum, or a local club. Engaging with like-minded individuals around you can significantly enhance your chances of success. The sense of accountability and shared experiences can be powerful motivators.
Focus on Self-Care
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect self-care. Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being is essential for your goals. Divide time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Read a book, take a leisurely walk, or indulge in a favorite hobby.
Burnout is a real threat to resolution success. Recharge your batteries and maintain energy to pursue your goals.
Track Your Progress
Documenting your journey is an effective way to stay accountable and measure progress. Create a simple tracking system that allows you to monitor your weekly achievements. This could be a journal, a mobile app, or a basic checklist.
Reflecting on your progress provides valuable insights into what’s working and what isn’t. What is not working may need some adjustments. It also serves as a tangible reminder of how far you’ve come.
Learn from Setbacks
It’s crucial to view setbacks as learning opportunities rather than failures. Take a moment to reflect on the factors that contributed to the setback. Was it a lack of planning, unexpected challenges, or unrealistic expectations?
Use setbacks as a chance to reassess and refine your approach. Adjust your goals if necessary. Apply the lessons learned to enhance your resilience and fortify your commitment.
Celebrate Milestones Towards Your Resolution

Don’t forget to acknowledge significant milestones. Whether it’s a month of consistent progress or achieving a specific goal. Take the time to celebrate your accomplishments. Treat yourself to a small reward or share your success with your support system.
Resolutions: Necessary or No?
If you are someone that thrives in goals for yourself, resolutations can be great. If you find yourself beating up on yourself years after year, let’s question if it’s a good idea. The choice is yours. If you do set a New Year’s Resolution keep these tips in mind. Remember, the journey towards self-improvement is a marathon, not a sprint.
